Avian-power line interactions in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia: are mitigation actions effective?

چکیده
Abstract Background Electrocution and collisions on power lines are among the leading causes of non-natural mortality for birds. Power exponentially increasing, particularly in developing countries, but mitigation strategies to prevent bird questionable. Mongolia combines a recently increased line network, an abundant raptor population, dangerous crossarm configuration habitat with no natural perches, producing many bird-power interactions. Our aim is assess caused by Gobi Desert Mongolia, determine factors increasing risk electrocution, evaluate effectiveness used retrofitting measures. Methods In July 2019 we covered 132.9 km 15 kV checking 1092 poles. We also conducted transects record corvid richness abundance, species vulnerability electrocution. Results recorded 76 electrocuted birds 7 species. rate was 6.96 birds/100 The most affected were Common Raven ( Corvus corax ) Upland Buzzard Buteo hemilasius ), highlighting electrocution 5 endangered Saker Falcons Falco cherrug ). By contrast, only 8 individuals colliding wires, being Pallas’s Sandgrouse Syrrhaptes paradoxus About 76.1% sampled poles had some measure. Of these, 96.6% brush perch deflectors 3.4% rotating-mirrors deterrents. found differences rates configurations, strain insulator one jumper lethal. Additionally, correlation between abundance rates, suggesting that more sensitive Although total detected without deterrents, when size considered, deterrents reduced small birds, while they ineffective medium-sized Conclusions Despite widespread use Mongolian there still alarming rate. This strategy mechanisms, such as deflectors, may increase Finally, propose minimize avian Desert.

15 صفحه اولIs Degradation a Major Problem in Semi-Desert Environments of the Gobi Region in Southern Mongolia?
This paper tests predictions derived from the non-equilibrium theory of rangeland science. Data were collected in livestock enclosures situated in the relatively moist desert steppes of the Gobi Gurvan Saykhan region of southern Mongolia from 2000 to 2003. Plant community composition and species’ richness in enclosures showed clear differences between years, but these were equally strong in ung...
متن کاملFungal Ferromanganese Mineralisation in Cretaceous Dinosaur Bones from the Gobi Desert, Mongolia
Well-preserved mycelia of fungal- or saprolegnia-like biota mineralised by ferromanganese oxides were found for the first time in long bones of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs from the Gobi Desert (Nemegt Valley, Mongolia). The mycelia formed a biofilm on the wall of the bone marrow cavity and penetrated the osteon channels of the nearby bone tissue. Optical microscopy, Raman, SEM/EDS, SEM/BSE, elect...

Contraction of the Gobi Desert, 2000-2012
Deserts are critical environments because they cover 41% of the world’s land surface and are home to 2 billion residents. As highly dynamic biomes desert expansion and contraction is influenced by climate and anthropogenic factors with variability being a key part of the desertification debate across dryland regions. Evaluating a major world desert, the Gobi in East Asia, with high resolution s...
